6 Months on the Road

It’s been 6 months since we hit the road and said goodbye to our friends and family.  6 months since I walked out the door and left my job and my work family. 6 months and 10 countries under our belts.  6 months on the road, what have we learned? There have been countless experiences that we have missed.  Kids having the last day of school, summer camp, first day of school, and more.  But we have had countless new experiences in so many countries and it has been wonderful. The things that had me worried before we left, like […]

A Round the World Ticket was the Wrong Choice for our Family

Recently, I spent some time chatting online with another family who was looking to do some long-term travel of their own. They were debating the merits of buying a Round the World Ticket vs just buying the flights (or using award tickets) as they went. I added my two cents to this debate and explained what we did and why. What is a round the world ticket? It is a ticket that costs a fixed amount for a certain number of flights that go around the world. Each airline partner group does this a bit differently. Some limit your number […]

Cost of Living in London for a Family

We did better on our London budget than I had thought. I had budgeted $85 / person / day as London is a famously expensive place.   Our planned budget for the month was $9860, but we can in at $ 7269.93, over $2500 under budget for the month! What we ended up spending was $62.67 per day. What Did We Do? For this price we: • Had Tube Passes and/or Oyster cards • Saw most of the major sites in and around London • Took day trips outside of London • Saw 2 musicals • Saw a movie at […]

Travel Budget Update

Our travel budget for the first 52 days on the road covering The East coast of the US, Ireland, and England. We did better on travel budget than I had hoped for!  Better in that we were under budget almost $1500 for this period. If you break it down, at less than $50 / person / day for US and Europe travel, it isn’t so bad. The total travel budget for this period was $11,740.  I know, seriously ouch. But if you break it down it is just over $56 per person per day.  This number is much more reasonable […]

Our first 29 nights on the road

Where did we stay, how much did it cost and did we break the bank? After our first 29 nights on the road, we found moving every couple days to be tiring. Moving is a lot of work and so is packing up all your stuff! I’ll be happy when we can ditch the car seats for the kids and don’t have to carry them any longer. Just a few more months until we can do that.  I think we are all looking forward to our month in London where we get to stay put for a while. Here is […]

Affordable dream trips for real families

We had a ton of people read our last post on how much our trip will cost. It seems to have hit a real nerve. I got a couple emails / comments about how much money it was and it would never be affordable for real families.  I wanted to show you that this is possible for a real families, with a little planning, imagination, and hard work. Remember, our budget was for 2.25 years, at about $67,000 a year. For this exercise, we are going to plan a couple different options that are shorter and more affordable.  For those […]

How much is all this going to Cost?

People keep asking me, How can you afford to do this?  How much is this trip going to cost?  Budgeting for a one week trip is hard. Budgeting for a 2+ year trip is impossible. It took me a while to figure out a methodology for how to do it. These are the steps that I took. Figure out where we were going to go and the rough time of year. The time of year matters because the cost of a place in high season can be quite different than low season. Figure out roughly how long we want to […]
